Leelanau County and the outlying areas boast a wide-range of cultural events, many of which take place in unique and charming venues.  Movie lovers must see the carefully restored, turn of the century State Theatre in Traverse City, which was lovingly refurbished by the Traverse City Film Festival, with the support of the local Rotary Club and many members of the community.  The most recently opened Bijou by the Bay is also run by the Film Festival.  Together, they offer a wide array of classic, independent, foreign, and popular films.  The Bay Theatre in Suttons Bay expands options for move lovers even further.

Traverse City's beautiful City Opera House offer a wide variety of cultural programming.  Highlights, for many residents, include the National Writers Series, which brings a range of successful commercial and literary authors year round.  The Traverse City Winter Comedy Arts Festival features guests from Sinbad to Jeff Garlin.  Music lovers will want to catch one or more performances at the nearby Interlochen Center for the Arts, which regularly brings world-famous performers in a variety of genres to the area.  Student perfomances, however, should not be overlooked, and offer a rare chance to hear some of the most talented young musicians in the world at little or no cost.
