Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear, park partner of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, announces its first “We Love Our Park!” photography contest. This year, the subject is historic and cultural resources in the Park. The deadline for digital submissions is July 6th. Participants can enter up to two photos of historic buildings located in the park, for $20, or three photos for $25. PHSB invites people to get out and visit the historic buildings in the Park and experience first-hand the magnitude and value of this heritage.
PHSB’s Director Susan Pocklington encourages entrants to check out the “Take a Tour” page at www.phsb.org, for the listing and location of the park’s historic properties. “We hope people will have fun exploring and capturing the feeling, architecture, and story of these remnants of history.”
The top 15 photographs chosen by our judge, professional photographer Tom Kachadurian of Traverse City, will be made available for public voting online from July 22 – August 4. The public can vote for their favorite and have a chance to win a $40 cash prize for voting. The top two winners and an honorable mention will be awarded prizes on Friday, August 12th at PHSB’s annual picnic. 1st prize includes a one-year contract to sell the winning image at PHSB’s Olsen House sales area and a two-night stay at the The Sylvan Inn. The contest is sponsored in part by The Sylvan Inn of Glen Arbor, and The Camera Shop and Backcountry Outfitters of Traverse City. I am confused. I just viewed the finalists and noticed that the same person was chosen four times. I thought only three entries were permitted per person. That’s what it says above. Can I get my entry fee back?

They had some technical difficulties that have been corrected. If you go back to their website you will see that the names have been corrected and an explanation is provided as well. Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear is an organization that is working diligently to make a difference in the National Park to restore and preserve the historical and cultural heritage of buildings, structures and natural landscape of the area. By your participating in the contest, you are helping make a difference in the National Park as well. Thanks for participating and we hope you will continue to support the efforts of PRESERVE.

Hi Adam,
We absolutely understand your confusion and apologize for that. I can assure you, however, that all is well – with the exception of a communication dilemma now on our hands. There are actually 11 contestants, 15 images from the 35 entrants and 99 amazing images submitted, that were selected as finalists. No one submitted (or at least we didn’t accept) more than the three allowed. Like you, we discovered something appeared skewed with regard to the names chosen. After talking with Photoscramble.com about it (our contest site host) this morning, we learned that it’s a technical limitation on their end that has caused this confusion. They told us that when uploading the finalist’s images, they had to create a few user names (the four you mention)that are mere placeholders. That in fact, the names you see under the photos do not identify any of the photographers – definitely a recipe for confusion. However, if you look at the voting page, you will see the vote button under each photo. When you click that, it will take you to a page that shows the photographer’s name on the right hand side. We have posted this information on our website and of course apologize for the angst this may have created amongst any of our photographers and voters. Although the Photoscramble IT team has been very helpful, they are not set up with the capability we need and we will correct these issues in the future. Thank you for your participation, and if you have further questions, please do email me. Thank you for your patience as we work out the technical glitches this first year. We hope we will continue to have your support for all of the largely volunteer-oriented work that we do for the Park.
